Carteret National Honor Society
History of NHS
Edward Rynearson was a leader in the national development of education through the public school system. In 1907, he opened the doors to evening classes for students in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania High Schools, opening a new way for students to gain their education. He spent his 36 years in educational development pushing for students. In 1919, at the annual convention of the National Honor Association of Secondary School Principals, Edward Rynearson proposed that the group form and sponsor a National Honor Society. Concerned about the growing emphasis on athletics in the nation’s high schools, Mr. Rynearson and other principals wanted to encourage a different set of values: enthusiasm towards scholarship, a love of service, an instinct to lead, and the development of character. In 1921, their desire led the NHASSP to pass a resolution which created the National Honor Society.Mr. Rynearson and the other principals wanted NHS to satisfy more than simply a social need. They believed NHS should better the individual, the school, and the community. The benefits provided by the National Honor Society caused people to regard the organization as a concrete method of promoting high school academic standards, a means of enduring the continuation of democracy, and an instrument for the advancement of both the individual and the institution. Now, with over 12,500 chapters, NHS is the leading organization for the recognition and involvement of outstanding students in secondary schools around the nation.
About Us
Carteret High School's Chapter of the National Honor Society demonstrates our students' abilities to embody scholarship, character, leadership and service in the community. Throughout the year, members of our chapter serve as role models for other students. In addition to their strong academic records which establish their eligibility for membership, our chapter members are leaders in many student organizations and serve our school and community through many activities. We are proud of this record of accomplishment and welcome all new members who will bring new energy in support of our continuing work as an NHS chapter.
