• Welcome To Mrs. Nieratka's Page:

  • Hello,
Welcome to 3rd Grade.  There are many new and exciting changes here at Columbus School and I am so excited to be part of it all.  Our Math program is called Ready Math.  You will see the students bringing home parent letters as we learn new strategies and skills in the classroom.   There is also a computer piece that analyzes where a student needs help and provides lessons for those skills to help each individual student. The reading program we are using is Readers Workshop and it can quickly become students' favorite part of the day.  This format gives students tools for selecting and comprehending literature, students who were once reluctant to read now find themselves with the skills needed to be successful readers. Over the course of the year, students read many books and are encouraged to do as good reader's do in exploring different genres, authors, and texts.  The program emphasizes the interaction between readers and text. Students learn to ask questions, make connections with prior knowledge and previously read texts, and ask questions to clarify faulty comprehension they recognize has occurred.  The program includes peer conferences and teacher conferences with students but emphasizes students' independence and allows them to become successful readers outside of the classroom.  Our writing program this year will work similiar to the reading program using mentor texts and writing strategies.  Our science program is Mystery Science where students watch and learn and then have the opportunity to conduct group experiments with teacher guidance.  Social Studies is where students learn about the government branches and the responsibilities they possess,  also we learn about immigration.  I hope we have a great year filled with exploring, learning, and creating.
