Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Alanna Mercurio

I was born and raised in northern New Jersey.  I am a 2005 graduate of Montclair State University where I received my certification as a K-8 English Language Arts teacher.  In 2007, I completed a program at Rowan University where I received my certification as teacher of students with disabilities.  After working in a few other districts (public and private), I came to Carteret in 2010.  As an In-Class-Resource teacher I have the opportunity to assess the unique needs of each student as an individual and tailor the materials in the best way to reach them.  I truly love my job and I hope that is apparent through my personality and work each day.

I also lead the Wingman program which we began at CMS in September 2019.  Wingman is a social-emotional program in which student leaders, called "Wingmen" are trained by me and then go from classroom to classroom working with their peers.  Our goal is to foster a sense of self-esteem, respect, community, and team-building.  The Wingman program began in Connecticut but is now widespread across the U.S. and also in Australia.  The aim of the program is to reduce bullying, social isolation and violence through community building.  I enjoy every minute of it and am excited to continue with this program.

I am the proud recipient of the Teacher of the Year award for the 2021-2022 School Year.

I also run an organization called Maryah's Bucket List which works to help to grant the wishes of pediatric cancer patients.  I began this in honor of a former student, Maryah, who passed from cancer in 2022.

Personally, I am an avid reader and I love baking.  I also find great peace at the beach and look forward to spending time in the sand each summer.  I am  very blessed to be the mother of two wonderful and kind daughters, ages 9 and 10.
